ALUMNI CLARK NAMED CAPTAIN OF THE CAPITOLS
News Item: September 014, 2006
From: CANADIAN PRESS at http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=177384&hubname=nhl
WASHINGTON (CP) - Chris Clark is the new captain of the Washington Capitals.

The 30-year-old winger becomes the 13th captain in franchise history after Jeff Halpern left via free agency this summer.

''The true leader in our dressing room has always been our goalie Olaf Kolzig but it's a technicality (league rules) that he can't be the captain,'' Clark told The Canadian Press on Wednesday. ''So I really had not thought too much about it until Monday when (coach) Glen Hanlon called me in for a meeting and told me about it. It's a huge honour.''

The Caps had been considering franchise player Alexander Ovechkin but the Calder Trophy winner politely declined, saying he wants to improve his English before taking on such a huge responsibility.

''Just him saying that, taking himself out of consideration, shows that he is a leader,'' Clark said of Ovechkin. ''To be 21 years old and say something like that, it shows huge maturity. And he's always showed maturity. He's definitely the best player on the ice for us and eventually this team will be his and he'll be ready for it.''

Clark played on Ovechkin's line last season, putting up career highs in goals (20) and points (39) while also registering 110 penalty minutes.

''Leadership is not a sometime thing or a come and go thing,'' said Caps GM George McPhee. ''It is an all-the-time thing. Chris Clark has all-the-time leadership qualities. He is a leader in the mold of one of our all-time favourites, Dale Hunter; a quiet man off the ice, a cantankerous, ultra-competitive player on the ice.''

The six-foot, 200-pounder was acquired from Calgary in August 2005 along with a seventh-round draft choice in the 2007 entry draft in exchange for a seventh-round choice in 2006 and a sixth-round choice in 2007. He has 55 goals and 55 assists in 356 career NHL games and was part of the Calgary Flames team that reached the Stanley Cup final in 2004.

After struggling to stay in the NHL earlier in his career, Clark never once thought he'd ever be an NHL captain.

''No, never,'' he said with a laugh. ''My first two years were up and down with the minors and I was battling. My goal was just to stay in the league, never mind ever be a captain. It never crossed my mind.''

News Item: May 10, 2006
Alumni veteran Sean Ellis, a junior forward for Amherst College, (MA) was named the Amherst College Men’s Hockey Player of the Year earlier this week after leading the Lord Jeffs in scoring with a 10-14-24 points line. Ellis, who is the son of long time Gary Dineen Hockey School instructor and current Midget Associate Head Coach Mike Ellis, spent five years in the Coyote program at both the Midget and Junior levels before being accepted at Amherst College, arguably the best liberal arts school in the country. The Lord Jeffs are coached by Jack Arena, who recruited Sean along with then assistant coach Mike McGlaughlin, (now a volunteer assistant coach with the Jr Falcons EJHL team.) Ellis, who also works tirelessly in the off season on his speed, agility, quickness and strength with the Falcons own “Crazy” Paul Cacolice, long time Strength and Conditioning Coach, was also name Team Captain for the Amherst squad for the 2006-2007 hockey season. General Manager Gary Dineen said, “ Sean was one of our most dedicated student athletes and his hard work and patience paid off with not only a great hockey career so far at Amherst, but an education that is exceptional and will serve him well when he graduates. We all know Sean has leadership skills, and I am not surprised at all that he will Captain the team his Senior year.”

Former Jr. Falcons goaltenders from last season All American Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (UMass-Dartmouth) and Doug Raeder, (Middlebury) finished in the top three of all goaltenders nationwide in Division II/III hockey this season.  Burek, also tied for the nationwide lead in save percentage.   Ross Cherry, a teammate of Raeders on national champion Middlebury, finished first with a 13-1-1 record, .930 save percentage, and 1.40 goals against average.  Raeder finished second with an 11-1-1 record, 9.35 save percentage, and 1.54 goals against average.  Dryjowicz-Burek finished third overall, with a 17-5-0 record, a .941 save percentage, and a 1.73 goals against average.  He also played a whopping 1,356 minutes.
Jr. Falcons goaltending development coach Randy Hevey, (former minor pro goaltender and national champion at Norwich University), said that the two goaltenders are proof positive that you can “develop into a solid college goaltender in the Eastern Junior Hockey League.”  Hevey, who together with former Norwich classmate Nate Eusko direct the Junior Falcons goaltending development area, have designed a specific goaltender program for each age group from Squirts to Juniors, and with their junior, college, and pro playing experience have the ability to translate their knowledge to the Junior Falcons goaltending cadre.  “There is no question that goaltenders are different and their approach to the game has to be based on certain fundamentals”, said Hevey.  As a component of the Gary Dineen Hockey School, Eusko and Hevey are available for youth clinics in our area.  They can be reached at the Junior Falcons office 860-745-5588.

ALUMNI McCUTCHEON HIGHLIGHTED IN ARTICLES
Updated News Item: February 6, 2005
Alumni Mark McCutcheon, a student-athlete at Cornell was highlighted in a recent article in the Rochester Democrat Chronicle entitled "Chasing the puck and an Education at Cornell" and in USCHO.com regarding  Cornell's recent overtime win versus their travel partner Colgate.
An excerpt from USCHO.com
With 39 seconds remaining, Cornell's Mitch Carefoot quickly changed while his team had possession in the Colgate zone. Replacing him was McCutcheon - the team's second-leading goal-scorer despite never having scored in either of his preceding two years at Cornell - who streaked into the high slot. Abbott, who won the battle for puck possession in the corner, fired a pass onto McCutcheon's tape, and McCutcheon wristed one that found its way through the five-hole of Dekanich, possibly off a Raider forward in front of the net.
"Mitch changed early, which is something that we've been working on all year - good cycle shifts," said McCutcheon. "I guess I called loud enough [for the pass], and [once I got it] I just tried to put it on net."
"This weekend will really help our momentum in the stretch-run," McCutcheon added.

An excert from the article by Jim Mandelaro in the Rochester Democrat:
After graduating from Pittsford Mendon, Mark McCutcheon went on to play in the Eastern Junior Hockey League.
He earned All-Star honors after finishing in the Top 10 in scoring in 2002-03. Months later, he was selected in the fifth round of the NHL draftby the Colorado Avalanche. The 6-foot-1 forward decided on college instead, and had his share of schools recruiting him.
"Michigan State, New Hampshire and Cornell were the ones I focused on,'' he says. "And all for different reasons.'' McCutcheon chose Cornell, a university in Ithaca that (like all Ivy League institutions) does not offer athletic scholarships.
"It came down to education and hockey,'' he says. "It was the combination.''
That combination has unlocked many doors for student-athletes - emphasis on the student - through the decades. The desire to earn a fantastic education and play at hockey's highest college level is why Cornell remains a national power while the Boston Colleges and Michigans of the hockey world hand out full rides. The Big Red came one goal short of reaching the NCAA Division I Frozen Four last year. They'll enter Saturday night's game against Niagara University at Blue Cross Arena ranked 11th nationally (down from fifth after a recent slump). They were ranked as high as No. 2 last month.
