New England Jr. Falcons impress at Bell Capital Cup
ENFIELD, CT, January 3, 2010 -The New England Jr. Falcons hockey club was well represented at North America’s largest youth hockey tournament over New Year’s weekend. The Bell Capital Cup, located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, is sponsored by Bell Canada and the Ottawa Senators, and routinely draws more than 500 of the world’s best teams at the Squirt and Pee Wee levels.
The Jr. Falcons Pee Wee Major, Pee Wee Major Selects and Squirt Major teams were all invited to participate in this prestigious tourney and represented the Western Massachusetts/Northern Connecticut area well.
The Squirt Major team, led by Nick Cocchi (Minnechaug High School, Head Coach), and playing in the AAA division, ended the tourney with a 2-1-1 record and enjoyed individual success with defenseman Brian Scoville (Agawam, MA) and forward Kyle Glenn (Unionville, CT) being selected to participate in the Scotiabank-Canadian Tire All-Star Game. Participating in the Algonquin College Skills Competition, Devan Tongue (Hampden, MA) was a finalist in the shooting accuracy challenge, while Gene Bouthiette (Enfield, CT), John Fiallo (East Longmeadow, MA), John Peloso (Townshend, VT) and Josh Decarolis (Wilbraham, MA) were finalists in the speed relay event.
The Pee Wee Major Selects, coached by Ray Veilleux (GD Alumni) and playing in the AA Division, had three players selected for the Scotiabank-Canadian Tire All-Star Game. Forward Connor Sullivan (Westfield, MA), defenseman Sam Adler (Longmeadow, MA) and goaltender Ryan Laviolette (Feeding Hills, MA) were on the winning All-Star team, while Tim Atkins (Greenfield, MA), Landon Gabriele (Woodbury ,CT) and Andrew Goncharov (Simsbury, CT) were finalists in the Algonquin College Skills Competition stick-handling agility relay.
The Pee Wee Majors, coached by Lincoln Flagg (GD Alumni), and playing in the AAA Division, ended with a 1-1-2 record, nearly qualifying for the tourney semi-finals. The team was well represented at the Scotiabank-Canadian Tire All Star Game and Algonquin College Skills Competition. Coach Jeff Daury (Pittsfield, MA) led goaltender Nick Bridges (Southwick, MA) and forward Charlie Kelleher (Longmeadow, MA) to a win in the All-Star Game, while Kelleher was named Most Valuable Player, recording three goals and an assist. Kelleher, along with D.J. Petruzzelli (Wilbraham, MA) and Joe Mercadante (Feeding Hills, MA) won the Skills Competition power play challenge, while Dylan Presnal (Ludlow, MA), Zeke Emerson (Deerfield, MA) and Josh Hillebrecht (Stafford Springs, CT) were finalists in the stick-handling agility relay.
The GD Alumni Group is extremely proud of all three teams and look forward to sending Jr. Falcons teams to this prestigious tournament for years to come.
