PROGRAM OUTLINE
Ø 2002 birth year and younger
Ø Learn to Skate program is a prerequisite. Jr. Falcons LTS program runs October thru March
Ø FUN! - Hockey should be fun for the player
Ø The kids should love to come to the rink whether it’s for practice or for a game
Ø Skating skills will be the emphasis with puck skills secondary
Ø Practice will be run as a clinic environment
Ø Players will be kept active by dividing into stations and working with players of equal skill
Ø Game situations will be used frequently
Ø Reinforcement of previous lessons and repetition are key to acquiring the basic skills needed to advance the player
Ø Equal or balanced ice time for game situations
TRAINING SESSIONS
Ø Twice per week beginning 10/2/2010 (9:10 AM). Go to Team, Mite Development Program, for detailed schedule.
Ø Fifty minute sessions
Ø Five month season - October thru March
Ø Cross ice games will be incorporated beginning in November
SKATING SKILLS
Ø Basic stance - proper posture, knees bent, back straight, head up, stick on ice
Ø Getting back to your feet after a fall
Ø Two foot glide
Ø One foot glide
Ø T-push
Ø Glide turns – inside/outside edge control
Ø Hockey hops
Ø Stopping, V- stop, hockey stop - one foot and two feet
Ø Forward stride
Ø Backward C-cut
PUCK SKILLS
Ø Proper grip of stick
Ø Stick-handling
Ø Passing – forehand/backhand
Ø Receiving – forehand/backhand
Ø Shooting – forehand/backhand
TEAM SKILLS
Ø Players will learn to function as a team by doing drills together and interacting both on and off the ice
Ø Respect for players, coaches, official and parents
Ø Listening at all times
Ø Positions - NONE
EQUIPMENT
Proper sizing of all equipment is essential for player safety and playing effectiveness
Ø Skates- must fit properly; used skates are OK
Ø Helmet, with mask
Ø Gloves
Ø Stick- cut at the nose when standing on skates. Wooden sticks are good at this age
Ø Shin pads
Ø Elbow pads
Ø Undergarment layers
Ø Protective cup
Ø Hockey socks or sweat pants
Ø Garter belt or shorts with Velcro to hold up socks
Ø Hockey pants
Ø Jersey (Provided by NE Jr. Falcons)
